February Update

February 2016
  • Last month: Well I don’t like to go on about the weather but here goes….. Yes it has been wet but its not the amount of rain that has been the problem. It is the frequency of the weather, Not enough dry days for my liking. So what does it mean for us? Well we have had continued growth over the winter which in turn means more thatch build up, we now need to get on top of this and replace it with sand, this will keep the surface firm and free draining, We have continued our aeration program throughout the wet weather in the form of deep tining slitting and saral rolling. The greens are cut to 5.5mm by a walk mower at present and have held up well to the elements. Continued woodland work has been carried out to the LHS of the 9th and RHS of the 10th as it has been the driest areas to work.

  • Greens: We will be Hollow coring greens with our new Toro Pro core, this will be with an 8mm tine going down just below the thatch at around 20mm. an application of sand will be spread over the greens and brushed in. A  continued plan of Sarol rolling and slitting will be a priority to keep the moisture moving through the root zone. We will apply a turf tonic consisting of high iron and potassium thus keeping the cell walls strong and, hopefully, disease at bay. Greens height has stayed at 5.5mm but, depending on conditions this may vary. Another light topdressing will be applied towards the end of the month.
  • Tees: The tees will have the blocks moved daily and the divots repaired. The height of cut will remain at 13mm. all tee posts have been removed dried sanded stained and will be replaced in March. A. high iron spray feed will be applied mid month to knock the moss and this will be followed up with a deep scarify next month.
  • Fairways:  Fairways will be brushed and cut to remove all the lateral growth. However, this can only be done in dry conditions.
